Obituary

Margret Atkin Cole, 92, Widow of John William Cole, of Belton, died August 31, 2023, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community.

Born July 17, 1931, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Vernon Atkin, Sr and Vennie Jeanette Ellison. She was a member First Baptist Church, Belton and the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class; she was a teacher at the Martha Adams Kay Sunday School Class and a member of the W.M.U. Other organizations were the Anderson County Woman’s Club, Anderson County Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, Belton Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Hudson Berry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Jacob Van der Ver Chapter Of Colonial Dames XVII Century, and Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Belton Area Museum Association and Belton Interfaith Ministry Association.

She was a graduate of Winthrop College (now Winthrop University), she did graduate work at Furman University and completed a master’s in education degree at Clemson University. She retired as an educator in Anderson County School District Two, beginning her career as a teacher at Belton High School and then at Belton-Honea Path High school where she taught English, French, and Latin. She was very knowledgeable, kind and genuinely interested in helping everyone she met and was known for her bright smile.

Surviving are: children, John Newton Cole and wife Kathy Lupo Cole of Ladson, SC, James Vernon Cole and wife Leticia Dawn Cole of Huntsville, AL: brothers, Clinton Vernon Atkin, Jr., of Anderson and Albert Allen Atkin, Sr., of Anderson; sisters, Barbara Cooley of Honea Path and Cynthia Campbell of Iva; grandchildren, Amanda Cole, John William Cole, Amie Cole Doby, Suzanne Cole and Rebecca Cole; 6 great-grandchildren.

Service will be held at 3pm Sunday September 3, 2023, at Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nick Kirby officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories.

The family will receive friends prior to service Sunday from 1:30 until 2:45pm at the Funeral Home.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

The family will be at their respective homes.
