Patrick "Pat" Mulligan Obituary

Patrick (Pat) Parker Mulligan, from Belton, SC, left her earthly life at Hospice of the Upstate on Monday February 6, 2023, after a distinguished life of Christian service to her family, her church, her community, Anderson College (now University), and other countries.

Pat was the daughter of the late Jasper and Louise Parker (Brooks) and the widow of Kenneth P. Mulligan. She is survived by her children, Patrick Mulligan (Dawn) and Malura Shady (Nick); brother Danny Brooks (Lynn); grandchildren Megan, Seth, Ryon, Josh (Britni), Kensley; great-grandchild Beau; and sister Barbara Brown (Donald). Pat also leaves behind countless family members, colleagues, former students, and friends who witnessed her live out her deep Christian faith with dedication, strength, courage, determination, and leadership.

Pat was a lifelong and very active member of Belton First Baptist Church, where she served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, member of various committees and teams, and participated in mission trips. She spent 28 years as a Professor of History and Political Science at Anderson College (now University), having served as Department Head, Faculty Chair, and various committee chairs, as well as in other leadership roles. In every situation, she was always an encourager.

Pat delighted in providing opportunities for others to benefit from international travel and experiences. While a professor, she and faculty colleagues planned and sponsored multiple trips, visiting virtually all over the world. Pat was also an active participant in the Consortium for Global Education (CGE). Under CGE sponsorship, she taught in Thailand and other countries.

Through CGE, she learned of work opportunities in Russia. This led her to take early retirement in 1999 in order to serve – first in Russia and then in Turkey – for a total of 15 years.

While there, she planned for and hosted countless individuals and groups who were thus enabled to serve the people and experience the cultures of Russia and Turkey. In all her work, she was a master organizer, planner, and host - abilities that she used to bless many people and organizations.

In all that Pat did, she was indeed a "good and faithful servant." She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of the following: Belton First Baptist Missions, Hospice of the Upstate, or the Pat Mulligan Endowed Scholarship at Anderson University (Anderson, SC), a scholarship established by Belton First Baptist Church to honor Pat and her service to other countries. The scholarship is designed to assist the children of missionaries in attending Anderson University.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday February 8, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Belton, with Rev. Nick Kirby and Rev Dale Lynch officiating.
